1. We participated twice in a dog rescue relay. Each time, we drove two dogs from Paducah to Marion. Each time, we became a bit attached to the dogs and hated to wake them up from their cozy spots to move to a new car. Caroline blogged about it here.
2. We had our Valentine's Day meal at home at the end of February instead of on Valentine's Day. The kids help me make Quinoa cakes and they were busy all afternoon making valentines for each other, their babies, and their favorite stuffed animals (it's become a tradition to receive a Valentine from Pooh and Kitty and Lambie).
3. We read Julie of the Wolves. We loved it (until the end) and learned so much about the Arctic. It spurred us to watch several PBS nature videos about grizzlies and snow owls. I was very upset when the pack leader was killed, but felt the author went too far by having Julie's little bird die on the last page! I think it was the kids' first experience with a bad ending. The girls wanted to start the other books. I, on the other hand, needed a break from depressing literature. :)
4. Jenna started taking a writing class with several other kids. She's enjoyed several of the assignments and likes reading what she's written to the other students. She decided to write about Alaska in this assignment since we were still reading Julie:

6. Despite continued cloudy and cool temperatures, the girls and I played Indians together outside one afternoon:

7. We took our little pink tent and the girls and I visited Massac Creek one weekday afternoon. We had such a good time! We got really, really tickled several times playing "ridiculous" as Jenna calls it (like Ma telling Laura and Mary to shut-up). We had to leave when it clouded up because, like the rest of this spring, it was chilly! The kids painted themselves afterwards with some Indian paint rocks we found.
8. We got some chicks! (Girls, thank your dad for this one. I wanted them initially, but changed my mind because I didn't want something else to take care of. :)). We started out with three black, sex-linked hens. The lady we bought them from had over 200 birds and showed us a duck hatching from an egg. The girls were fascinated and didn't know there would be blood inside the egg. Caroline asked to see the duck again as we were leaving. Jenna is quite the mother hen with the chicks. She is great with them and takes care of them everyday. Two weeks later, we bought 2 Ameracuanas and 2 Rhode Island Reds. Now, my kitchen table is covered in chickens. Thank goodness Jenna keeps such a close eye on them. *Jenna blogged about it here and Caroline here.
9. Birthday Parties! The girls went to a birthday party after co-op with a bunch of other little girls. :) It ended up being a four hour play-date. The next weekend, we celebrated Maddox's fourth birthday followed by Olivia Harp's 18th beautiful Birthday Blessing Party. (Apparently at the first birthday party, Caroline fell really hard on the trampoline. She only wanted to be consoled by Jenna-we weren't there-so, Jenna just held her in the middle of the trampoline until Caroline felt better)
10. Jenna played Stand by Me in the Allen Music spring concert. The music was great, lots of our co-op friends also participated, and both kids loved it. Jenna is practicing now to play with her violin teacher in another concert at the end of this month.
11. Caroline colored a leprechaun and then declared that she wanted to make a stuffed animal out of it. So, we did.
12. I bought some Montessori Animals in Winter cards and the girls liked sorting them. Here's proof they learned from them too: Caroline declared one day day in the backseat, "You mean porcupines ADAPT?!" in response to a story about a porcupine getting buried in the snow. That was a couple of weeks after sorting the cards. I plan to try some more from this company. Oh-and also notice the paper dolls we made on top of the puzzle.
13. Daddy is reading the second Harry Potter book to all of us. We get more of "Mouthboy" (as Caroline calls Draco Malfoy). :)
