On books...

The girls and I were engrossed in this book for the last couple of weeks (it's rather long!) at breakfast, lunch, and bedtime.

Mama's brief review: Characters and Story:  Jill's character was bright and strong and we all felt for her as she tried to care for the baby ants.  We all laughed at Cricket, loved Nosy, thoroughly enjoyed the ant communication and got grossed out in the grub-eating scenes (grossed out in a good way).  Jenna was really disappointed when the book was over.
I have a new-found appreciation for the complicated, fascinating world of ants.  The timing was great; we'd collected some carpenter ants from a rotten long several weeks ago for Jenna's ant farm.  The story prompted us to look up pictures of ants and to watch videos of them working and drinking.  (We watched one video of an ant war, but Jenna became very upset by the ruthless beheadings that occurred). Now the kids expertly throw around words like "pupae" and "larvae."  In fact, Caroline's first blog entry was about pupae.  :)

Random note here too:  Jenna said her favorite book of 2012 was Kaspar, the Titanic Cat.  I wish I would have blogged about it right after we read it because it was FABULOUS.  The writing was some of the best, if not the best, writing in a children's book I've encountered so far.
